Goat Snuggling Farmer Faces Animal Cruelty Charges

The owner of Steinmetz Family Farm in Temple, Pennsylvania, known for its popular “goat snuggling” attractions at the Pennsylvania Farm Show and York State Fair, is facing felony animal cruelty charges. Justin Steinmetz, 44, is accused of performing an emergency C-section on a goat, resulting in the animal’s death.

Details of the Case

According to charging documents filed February 19 by the Berks County Rescue League, the incident occurred on October 24, 2025. Steinmetz allegedly performed the C-section on a goat named Brawny without anesthesia or the presence of medical professionals. Local21News.com reports that Brawny was taken to Quakertown Veterinary Clinic with her intestines and organs exposed, but ultimately died during surgery.

Investigators claim the procedure was livestreamed on Steinmetz’s private YouTube channel. A 25-minute, 12-second video, sent to authorities on November 4, 2025, allegedly shows Steinmetz using scissors and a pocketknife to perform the C-section. FOX43 reports that the goat could be heard “bleating in distress” throughout the video.

Steinmetz’s Response

Steinmetz told PennLive the incident was an emergency and that the farm frequently shares live updates, including animals in labor, on their YouTube channel, which has over 51,000 subscribers. “Like many farmers, we are often faced with making immediate decisions to endeavor to save an animal’s life when veterinary care is not immediately available. That was the mindset in this case — doing everything possible in the moment to help,” he stated. He added that, in hindsight, there are always things to reflect on, but his intent was to help an animal in need.

Legal Status and Background

Steinmetz is facing charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and other offenses. He is currently out on $25,000 bail and is scheduled for trial on May 11. LancasterOnline.com notes that the charges stem from a report received by the Department of Animal Protection on October 27, 2025.

The Steinmetz Family Farm has operated the popular “Goat Snuggling” attractions at the Pennsylvania Farm Show since 2022. The farm similarly offers traveling goats for parties, goat yoga, and “rent a goat” summer camps. Their Facebook page shows continued operation and community support.

Investigation and Veterinary Opinion

The veterinarian who treated Brawny told police she believes the goat was “opened incorrectly causing acute blood loss resulting in death.” According to charging documents, Steinmetz admitted to making a “rash decision to prioritize the baby’s life over the mom’s,” believing it was a life-or-death situation. He declined to have the kid examined.

Alyssa Budock, spokeswoman for the Berks County’s Department of Animal Protection, stated that the Animal Rescue League received online complaints that led to the investigation. The organization averages 20 to 40 cruelty and neglect calls or reports per month.
