Padres Shut Out for First Time This Season as Winning Streak Ends at Eight Games

April 17, 2026 – The San Diego Padres’ eight-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt Friday night at Angel Stadium, where they suffered an 8-0 shutout loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The defeat marked the first time the Padres have been held scoreless this season and ended their reign as owners of the longest active winning streak in Major League Baseball.

Starting pitcher Matt Waldron, making his season debut in place of the injured Nick Pivetta, struggled early, and often. He allowed six runs over 3⅔ innings, including three in the second inning on a solo home run, a hit batter, and two additional hits. Waldron added three more runs in the fourth inning before departing with two outs after Nolan Schanuel delivered an RBI single through the left-side gap.

Reliever David Morgan entered with runners on first and second and immediately surrendered a two-run double to Jo Adell, extending the Angels’ lead to 5-0. Morgan later yielded another two-run double to Adell in the same inning, capping a four-run frame that put the game out of reach.

Waldron expressed disappointment after the game, acknowledging the emotional weight of ending such a strong run. “It hurts,” he said. “That was a lot of wins we had there in a row. And I’ve been looking forward to this day a long time.” He added that despite feeling prepared, execution fell short: “I couldn’t have been more prepared. I couldn’t have been in a better mindset. I couldn’t have done anything except for make fewer mistakes.”

On the opposing side, Angels pitcher José Soriano came within one out of recording his 11th quality start of the season against the Padres. Though he did not earn the win, Soriano has now posted 10 quality starts against San Diego this season—the most by any pitcher against a single opponent in 2026.

Offensively, the Padres managed just three hits and left seven runners on base. Manny Machado drove in the team’s only run with a sixth-inning RBI groundout, but it was erased on the scoreboard as the Angels had already built an insurmountable lead. Xavier Bogaerts and Tristan France each recorded singles, while Jurickson Profar drew a walk, but San Diego failed to string together productive at-bats against Soriano and the Angels’ bullpen.

The loss dropped the Padres’ record to 12-8 on the season. Despite the setback, they remain above .500 and continue to rely on a deep lineup featuring Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Xander Bogaerts. The Angels improved to 10-10 with the victory, boosting their confidence as they look to climb in the tightly contested American League West standings.

San Diego will look to rebound in the series finale, aiming to avoid a split and regain momentum as they continue their early-season push for a playoff berth.
