Illinois defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck parted ways with the program just four games into his first season, coach Bret Bielema announced on Sunday. Hauck’s departure follows a 42-19 loss to Ohio State on Saturday, leaving the Illini with a 2-2 overall record and a 0-1 start in Big Ten play.
Defensive Struggles Prompt Sudden Change
Entering the week following the loss in Columbus, Illinois sat 100th nationally in scoring defense, 111th in total defense, and 119th in pass defense.
Bielema hired Hauck in February. Hauck arrived in Champaign less than a week after announcing his retirement from Montana, where he had served as head coach. Hauck stepped into the coordinator role to replace Aaron Henry, who departed the program to become the co-defensive coordinator at Notre Dame.
Mutual Agreement Reached on Sunday Morning
According to comments shared by Bielema, Hauck initiated contact early Sunday morning to request a meeting ahead of schedule. During that conversation, both parties determined that moving in a different direction served the best interests of the team.
