Paraguay on Alert: Middle East Conflict Raises Global Risks, Former Chancellor Warns
As tensions escalate in the Middle East following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Jamenei and subsequent attacks attributed to the United States and Israel, Paraguay is being warned of potential global repercussions. Former National Chancellor Euclides Acevedo has cautioned that the conflict could impact oil-dependent nations like Paraguay and even make the country a potential target for retaliation.
Geopolitical Concerns and Potential for Retaliation
Euclides Acevedo expressed concern over the current international landscape, highlighting the potential for a breakdown in international law and the diminished role of the United Nations. He warned that Paraguay could be vulnerable to repercussions, referencing the 1994 AMIA bombing in Argentina, which was reportedly planned in the Tri-Border region.
“Today, nothing is far from anything. We must be extremely prudent,” Acevedo stated, emphasizing the need for careful information management and a cautious approach to foreign policy.
Economic Vulnerability and Oil Dependence
Acevedo as well pointed to Paraguay’s economic vulnerability as an oil-dependent nation. He warned that the conflict, driven by interests in the petroleum and arms industries, could have indirect consequences for the country. The former chancellor suggested that economies reliant on oil should closely monitor the situation.
Criticism of Paraguay’s Diplomatic Stance
Acevedo criticized the Paraguayan Foreign Ministry’s public rebuke of Iranian aggression towards Gulf countries, deeming it “imprudent.” He argued that Paraguay should exercise greater caution and strategic thinking in its diplomatic approach.
A Shifting Global Order
The former minister also suggested the possibility of a new international order emerging, characterized by the absence of the UN and a more assertive role for powers like the United States, Russia, and China. He noted the potential for a more unstable global context.
