Milan Cortina Paralympics 2026: Games Amidst Global Conflict
The 2026 Winter Paralympic Games, set to seize place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, from March 6-15, are unfolding against a backdrop of escalating global conflicts. As the Games approach their 50th anniversary, the event is overshadowed by military clashes in both Ukraine and the Middle East, and by diplomatic tensions surrounding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes.
Olympic Truce Breached by Middle East Conflict
The traditional Olympic truce, a United Nations-backed initiative urging a suspension of military activity, was breached as the Paralympics preparations began. Airstrikes by Israel and the United States against Iran, and subsequent counter-strikes by Iran, commenced during the truce period, which was in effect until March 15 . This disruption has impacted travel arrangements for athletes and their families.
Michael Milton, a Paralympic Alpine skier from Australia, reported that his wife and two children were stranded in Doha, Qatar, for 24 hours after their flight to Venice was turned back due to the conflict . Even as expressing hope for their safety, he acknowledged the precariousness of the situation.
Ukraine Boycott Over Russian Participation
Diplomatic tensions have also arisen from the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) decision to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete under their national flags. This marks a departure from the policy of allowing athletes from those countries to compete as independents, which was in place since 2022 . In response, Ukrainian officials have announced a boycott of the opening ceremonies .
Athletes Prepare Amidst Uncertainty
Despite the challenges, over 660 athletes with disabilities from around the world are converging on Italy to compete. Athletes from Iran and Israel are among those participating . Abolfazl Khatibi of Iran will compete in para-cross-country skiing, while Sheina Vaspi of Israel is slated to race in para-Alpine ski events. The IPC has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the status of these athletes.
A Milestone Anniversary
The Milan Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games mark the 50th anniversary of the first Winter Paralympics, held in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden . The Games return to Italy after a 20-year absence, following the Olympic Winter Games held across the nation.
