Claire Byrne’s Newstalk Return and Pat Kenny’s Weekend Shift
A significant reshuffling of Newstalk’s broadcasting schedule has seen Claire Byrne rejoin the station to host a weekday mid-morning show, taking over from Pat Kenny, who is moving to a weekend slot. The changes reflect a strategic move by Bauer Media Audio Ireland to bolster its daytime programming.
Byrne Returns to Newstalk After Nearly Two Decades
Claire Byrne is returning to Newstalk after almost fifteen years, having previously worked at the station before her tenure at RTÉ. She expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating she was “delighted to be back” and looking forward to engaging with listeners on a daily basis. Byrne described it as a “particular honour” to succeed Pat Kenny. Newstalk announced her return on August 29, 2025.
Pat Kenny Transitions to Weekend Programming
Pat Kenny, who has hosted Newstalk’s 9am to 12pm programme since 2013 after leaving RTÉ, will now present his show on Saturdays and Sundays. Kenny expressed hope that the fresh schedule would allow him to continue making a “big impact” and thanked his listeners for their support. The move is part of a broader restructuring of Newstalk’s daytime lineup, announced by Bauer Media Audio Ireland in December.
A Wider Reshuffle at Newstalk
The changes at Newstalk are part of a larger plan to enhance audience growth across both FM and digital platforms. Eric Moylan, Newstalk Managing Editor, highlighted Byrne as a “seriously talented and skillful broadcaster” and a key component of these ambitious plans.
Byrne’s Transition from RTÉ
Byrne’s move to Newstalk follows her departure from RTÉ last year, where she hosted her own show on RTÉ Radio One. She recently discussed the transition and the prospect of taking over Kenny’s slot on RTÉ’s The Late Late Show, acknowledging it was “intimidating” but expressing excitement about the new show.
Launch of Byrne’s New Show
Claire Byrne launched her new Newstalk show on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, stating her intention to analyze current events and connect with listeners.
