Pato O’Ward has officially ended speculation regarding a potential move to Formula 1, confirming he will focus his long-term racing career exclusively on the IndyCar Series. The Arrow McLaren driver, currently under contract with the team through 2027, stated he is no longer pursuing a reserve role or a future seat in the F1 paddock, citing his satisfaction with the American-based series.
O’Ward’s Shift in Career Priorities
The decision marks a significant change in trajectory for the Monterrey native. Previously, O’Ward served as a reserve driver for McLaren’s Formula 1 entry, participating in various practice sessions and testing programs. However, in a recent appearance on the Speed Street podcast hosted by Conor Daly, O’Ward clarified that his professional motivations have evolved.

"I’m grateful for the experiences and everything I’ve learned in the world of Formula 1," O’Ward said. "But I think I’m in a different moment in my life now, and I no longer care. There is nothing in me that drives me to continue as a reserve in Formula 1, because I’m in a great moment in IndyCar."
O’Ward emphasized that his commitment to the IndyCar Series is rooted in his enjoyment of the racing product. He noted that he has formally requested to be released from his remaining F1-related service obligations to dedicate his full attention to his IndyCar campaign.
The Commitment to Arrow McLaren
Under the leadership of Zak Brown, Arrow McLaren has solidified its roster, with O’Ward remaining a central figure of the organization. His current contract, which runs through the 2027 season, provides him with stability and a competitive platform.
I don’t need more money," he stated. "I’m already in a position that I never thought I would reach when I was younger. I am very fortunate."
IndyCar vs. Formula 1: A Driver’s Perspective
He expressed a lack of interest in the current generation of Formula 1 machinery, contrasting it with the racing experience provided in IndyCar.
"It is the best place for more racing. Simple as that," O’Ward said. "I think many may have a different opinion. But for me, that’s where I’m happy."
Future Outlook
For O’Ward, the "great circus" of Formula 1 is no longer part of his professional roadmap; his objective is to remain the most prominent face of the IndyCar grid.
