Sidney Crosby Witnesses Dream Proposal, Sparks Viral Moment and Community Celebration

A chance encounter with Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby transformed a marriage proposal into a viral sensation and a heartwarming moment for one couple, Mathieu and Sandra, from Montreal. The proposal, which took place in January at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, Pennsylvania, has captured the attention of hockey fans and the wider community.

A Penguins Pilgrimage and a Surprise Proposal

Mathieu and Sandra traveled to Cranberry to watch the Penguins practice. Unbeknownst to Sandra, Mathieu had planned to propose, hoping to incorporate her love for Sidney Crosby into the special occasion. As the couple waited for players to exit the practice facility, Crosby appeared, and Sandra’s desire for a photo with her favorite player provided the perfect cover for Mathieu’s plan.

“I knew that her favorite player was Sidney Crosby, and she didn’t understand that I was going to propose,” Mathieu explained. Their son, Shayan, 18, was aware of the impending proposal and captured the moment on video, even catching Crosby giving a thumbs-up from his car as Mathieu got down on one knee.

A Dream Come True

Sandra revealed that she had only envisioned two scenarios for her engagement: a surprise in front of her family or a moment intertwined with her passion for hockey. “I never asked for it to be in front of Crosby; that’s why it is bigger than I ever imagined,” she said. Her connection to Crosby dates back to the 2014 Winter Olympics, where she first noticed the Canadian team captain while watching Team Canada play.

The Penguins hold a special place in the family’s history. Sandra’s son, Shayan, chose the Penguins as his favorite team at age seven, and has since modeled himself after Crosby, both on and off the ice. “He acts like him. He does everything,” Sandra shared. “He’s superstitious like him, and he’s kind to other people.”

A Viral Moment and Community Response

After posting the video on social media, the proposal quickly went viral, garnering widespread positive reactions. The heartwarming scene also caught the attention of Cranberry Township, which launched a “Love is in the Air” campaign to celebrate the couple’s story.

“It gave us the opportunity to celebrate not just one couple, but the spirit of connection and happiness that defines Cranberry Township,” said Tina Fedko, Director of Communications for Cranberry Township. Fedko highlighted the positive impact of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex on the community, noting its role in fostering local economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

More Than Just a Sport

For Mathieu, Sandra, and Shayan, who consider Pittsburgh a second home due to their dedication to the Penguins, the engagement represents a full-circle moment. From yearly trips to Pittsburgh to support the team, beginning in 2015, to the serendipitous encounter with Crosby, hockey has become a central part of their family bond.

“Moments like these – especially with Sidney Crosby there to witness – truly capture the spirit of our community,” Fedko added. “It was an unforgettable scene that brought excitement and a sense of shared joy across Cranberry Township and beyond.”
