On Aug. 25, the Pennsylvania Department of Health publicly reported two confirmed cases of measles-associated deaths. According to the state’s press release, both individuals were unvaccinated residents of Lancaster County. Citing privacy protections, state health officials withheld further personal details.
Later that day, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro held a press conference in Lancaster County alongside health department officials to underscore the announcement, urge public vaccination, and label the deaths as entirely preventable.
Conflicting Official Accounts and the Information Vacuum
Following the state’s announcement, questions emerged regarding the direct cause of the fatalities. Local coroner records and medical evaluations introduced conflicting narratives, creating what public health experts termed an information vacuum.
According to NBC News and FactCheck.org, one of the deceased individuals was an infant who tested positive for measles but ultimately died of a ruptured spleen. While medical professionals note that a ruptured spleen can potentially stem from a measles infection, the local coroner stated that the pathologist determined measles was not involved in the spleen’s rupture. Information regarding the exact cause and circumstances of the second death has not been released.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health later acknowledged that its use of the term “measles-associated” encompasses cases where the virus is detected but may not be designated by a medical certifier or coroner as the immediate cause of death.
“Pennsylvania created its own information vacuum and then seemed surprised when someone else filled it,” Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and an infectious diseases attending physician in Pittsburgh, stated to FactCheck.org via email. “The coroner’s account and the state’s account are not necessarily in conflict — they are two offices answering two different questions — but nobody in Harrisburg explained that, so the public was left to choose between fraud and incompetence.”
Federal Friction and Vaccine Debates
Kennedy Jr., who publicly alleged that a staffer working for Governor Shapiro may have fabricated the fatalities, as reported by The Washington Post and FactCheck.org.
The political clash also drew renewed scrutiny toward the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. During public appearances, discussions surfaced regarding the manufacturing process of the rubella component, which utilizes cell strains derived from elective abortions performed in the 1960s. Medical authorities emphasize that while trace cellular components persist in purified vaccines, whole cells do not, and major religious organizations maintain that the vaccine can be received with a clear conscience.
FactCheck.org noted that the situation in Pennsylvania mirrors prior disputes in Texas, where children died of measles complications and outside activists baselessly claimed the viral infections played no role in the deaths.
