Pete & Bas Rapper Collapses Onstage During Chicago Performance

Pete Bowditch, one half of the British rap duo Pete & Bas, collapsed mid-performance during a show in Chicago, Illinois, on Monday, March 16, 2026. The incident occurred even as Bowditch was suspended above the stage in a harness, prompting immediate concern from fans and event staff. He is now reported to be in stable condition.

What Happened?

Footage of the incident shows Bowditch, 70s, losing consciousness while rapping and dropping his microphone. He was left hanging motionless from the ceiling as the backing track continued to play. NME first reported the incident.

Statement from Management and Bowditch

Pete & Bas’ management released a statement on social media apologizing for the disruption and confirming Bowditch’s stable condition. They announced refunds for ticket holders and stated that the European tour dates would proceed as scheduled.

Bowditch later addressed the incident in a video update from his hospital bed, joking that he had been “pronounced dead on stage” due to exhaustion, but that doctors had revived him. He also announced plans for a 14-date US tour in June to “celebrate.”

Who are Pete & Bas?

Pete & Bas, comprised of Peter Bowditch and Basil Bellgrave, gained popularity after releasing their debut single, ‘Shut Ya Mouth’ in 2017. Inspired by drill music, the duo continued to write lyrics and released their first full-length album, ‘Mugshot’, in 2024. Bowditch, a retired Royal Mail employee, discovered his passion for rap music through his grandchildren.

Possible Cause and Safety Concerns

While the exact cause of Bowditch’s collapse remains unconfirmed, early reports suggest that restricted circulation caused by the harness may have been a contributing factor. National Today reports that the incident raises questions about safety precautions associated with elaborate stage designs and the risks of suspending performers.

What’s Next for Pete & Bas?

Despite the incident, Pete & Bas’ European tour is still scheduled to continue. The duo also plans to announce details for their upcoming 14-date US tour in June.
