PGA Tour Sets 2028 Match-Play Overhaul

The PGA Tour is fundamentally rewriting its championship architecture. By 2028, the Tour Championship will adopt a head-to-head format, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp announced.

The sweeping restructuring aims to engineer a sharper, higher-stakes conclusion to the season. Instead of a single venue hosting the year-end event under standard rules, the circuit will shift to a bracket-style tournament staged across rotating, prestigious courses.

A New Two-Tiered Postseason Architecture

The redesigned postseason road begins with the PGA Tour Championship Series Finale. This 72-hole stroke-play event gathers a field of 90 players who have secured their cards for the following season. Once this tournament concludes, officials will crown the season-long points winner, disburse official purses alongside bonus payouts, and lock in the final roster for the ultimate showdown.

Only the top 32 players on the final season-long points list advance to the redesigned Tour Championship. This standalone event stretches across two weeks, bringing match play to the postseason for the first time. Week one deploys a three-round group stage, while week two moves to a four-round match-play bracket to crown the Tour Champion.

Rory McIlroy Backs the Bold Strategy

World number two Rory McIlroy endorsed the shift as a “big swing” engineered to satisfy viewer demand. McIlroy noted that tour leadership consulted players and stakeholders extensively before greenlighting the blueprint. Match play has been missing from the PGA TOUR’s postseason, and the format has not been contested on TOUR since the 2023 WGC-Match Play.

“I think the PGA Tour and the Future Competition Committee and Brian and everyone involved have really taken on board what the fans have been calling for and have wanted, which is matchplay,” McIlroy said. He confirmed that Brian Rolapp walked him through the strategy ahead of the public rollout.

Rotating Elite Venues and Future Rollout

The compact field and distinct format open the door for geographical variety. Based in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, tour officials announced that the revamped Tour Championship will rotate annually among elite venues, unlocking courses historically excluded by modern stroke-play infrastructure demands.
