Pixelpaw Labs’ Phase Controller: A Hybrid Input Device for Gamers and Professionals

The gaming landscape is increasingly blurring the lines between traditional input methods. While mouse and keyboard enthusiasts remain a dedicated group and controller gamers maintain their preference, devices like the Lenovo Legion Go and the Nintendo Switch 2 with its updated Joy-Cons are attempting to bridge the gap. Now, startup Pixelpaw Labs is entering the fray with “Phase,” a split game controller designed to also function as a mouse, aiming to provide a single input solution for both gaming and productivity.

Bridging the Input Divide

Pixelpaw Labs’ Phase project seeks to combine the functionality of a mouse, a mobile gamepad, and a traditional controller into one portable device. The controller splits into two halves that connect magnetically and via pogo pin connectors, transforming into a standard PC mouse. This design caters to users who frequently switch between gaming and work or content creation on the go.

Design and Functionality

In gamepad mode, the Phase features a layout reminiscent of the Nintendo Wii Nunchuks, but with expanded controls. Each controller half includes an ABXY button layout with a joystick on the right and a joystick and D-pad on the left. Shoulder buttons and triggers are also present on each side. The controllers will offer 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity with 1 kHz polling, as well as Bluetooth. Pixelpaw Labs plans to offer a custom driver software with customizable controls, including a customizable layer button for mapping system controls without sacrificing core gaming functions.

Mouse Mode Features

When configured as a mouse, the Phase utilizes a 16,000 DPI sensor – likely a PixArt PMW 3389 or PAW 3335. Notably, the Phase foregoes a traditional scroll wheel in mouse mode. instead, the left click button functions as a touch-sensitive surface for scrolling. The mouse connects wirelessly or via USB-C.

Availability and Pricing

Pixelpaw Labs is currently accepting $20 refundable pre-launch deposits for the Phase, guaranteeing a 15% discount when the project launches on Kickstarter. The Kickstarter launch price is projected to start at $159, with the “Phasegrip” accessory (a docking solution for mobile gaming) adding an additional $29, bringing the total to $188. As with any Kickstarter project, there is a risk that the Phase may not reach production.

Potential Challenges and Considerations

As a first product from a novel company, the Phase project carries inherent risks associated with crowdfunding. However, the innovative design and the solutions developed to overcome design challenges, such as the touch-sensitive scroll surface, demonstrate a promising approach to a versatile input device.
