Filipino travelers are keeping their journeys close to home this Lenten season. According to a report from AirAsia MOVE, eight in 10 Filipinos booked local trips for their Holy Week 2026 vacation, signaling a strong preference for domestic travel and hometown visits over international excursions.

The Trend Toward Homecoming and Local Gateways

A significant portion of this year’s travel activity is driven by professionals and students returning to their provinces. Data shows that over half of all bookings depart from Manila, with a primary focus on homecoming trips. Specifically, two in five bookings from the capital are destined for provincial gateways, with Cebu, Iloilo, and Tacloban emerging as top destinations.

Although homecoming is the main driver, leisure travel remains a factor. Approximately 17 percent of travelers are flying to island destinations, most notably Caticlan and Puerto Princesa.

International Travel and Trip Duration

For those venturing outside the Philippines, destinations remain nearby. Only nine percent of departures from Manila are bound for international cities, with Kuala Lumpur and Taipei being the primary choices.

Trip lengths are generally brief, reflecting the standard holiday window. Two in five trips are short-term, lasting a maximum of four days.

Traveler Demographics and Booking Behavior

Booking patterns for Holy Week 2026 reveal a shift toward individual travel and advanced planning:

• Travel Companions: More than half of all travelers are flying solo. Other groupings include companions (18%), children (15%), and friends (11%).
• Planning Window: Last-minute bookings have dropped to just two percent. Instead, 29 percent of travelers booked their trips 30 days in advance, while 22 percent planned 60 days ahead.

Budget-Conscious Accommodations

Filipinos are prioritizing value-for-money when selecting lodging. Most travelers have limited their nightly expenditure to P4,000. This budget focus is reflected in the choice of properties, with 41 percent staying in four-star hotels and 37 percent opting for three-star properties.
