WhatsApp will officially drop support for dozens of older smartphone models running legacy operating systems, according to Meta’s updated support documentation. Users relying on aging Android and iOS devices face a definitive software cutoff that requires a hardware upgrade to maintain access to the encrypted messaging platform.

The policy change targets phones that no longer receive critical security patches or lack the processing capabilities required to run modern encryption protocols. Meta regularly updates its system requirements to maintain app performance and security standards across the global user base.

Affected Devices and Minimum Operating System Requirements

According to Meta, WhatsApp now requires Android devices running version 5.0 or newer, while Apple users must operate iOS 15.1 or later. Phones stuck on older operating systems cannot download app updates from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, and core messaging functions will gradually deactivate.

The phase-out directly impacts classic handsets released over a decade ago. Devices on the chopping block include several early-generation Samsung Galaxy models, older Motorola Droid units, and legacy iPhones such as the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c, which cannot update past iOS 12. Users attempting to open the app on unsupported hardware receive persistent notification prompts advising them to switch devices.

Why Meta Drops Support for Legacy Hardware

Security updates and feature additions drive the continuous tightening of operating system prerequisites. According to Meta’s engineering team, older software lacks the advanced architecture needed to support end-to-end encryption features like multi-device linking and vanishing messages safely.

Maintaining backward compatibility for obsolete software consumes disproportionate engineering resources while exposing users to unpatched vulnerabilities. By forcing a baseline threshold, Meta ensures that messaging data remains secure against modern decryption techniques and malware vectors.

How Users Can Save Chat History Before the Cutoff

Users operating devices nearing the deadline must export their chat histories to avoid data loss before the application ceases functioning entirely. According to official help guides, chats can be preserved by navigating to Settings, selecting Chats, and choosing Chat Backup to transfer records to Google Drive or iCloud.

5 Phones That Will NO LONGER Support WhatsApp in 2025

Switching to a supported device requires downloading the fresh application and restoring from the cloud backup using the same phone number. Anyone unable to upgrade immediately must rely on alternative SMS or web-based communication tools once the app blocks access.
