Google App Search Replacing Pixel Launcher for Some users: A Growing Bug
A recent and curious bug is affecting some Pixel phone users, causing the Google app’s device search to unexpectedly replace the standard Pixel Launcher experience. What was initially reported in the Google app beta program is now appearing on stable channel devices, impacting a growing number of users.
The Issue:
Rather of the familiar slide-up Pixel Launcher search – which maintains the user’s wallpaper as a background while offering web search, app suggestions, and recent queries within Material 3 Expressive containers – affected users are met with the Google app search interface when attempting to initiate a search from the home screen. The animation associated with launching the Google app is notably prominent during this transition.
Timeline of the Bug:
The first reports surfaced on December 5th, initially limited to users participating in the google app beta. However, as of December 13th, the issue has demonstrably spread. Multiple devices, signed into different Google Accounts, are now exhibiting the same behavior on the stable channel. This increase in reports coincides with the release of Google app version 16.49 to the stable channel on Friday.
What does This Mean for Users?
while the Google app search is functional, the unexpected replacement of the Pixel Launcher experience disrupts the established user flow and aesthetic. Pixel Launcher is known for it’s seamless integration with the device’s overall design and fast access to key features. The Google app search, while capable, presents a different interface and may not offer the same level of streamlined access.
Current Status & potential Fixes:
As of now, this is a reported bug and not an intentional change to the Pixel Launcher. Google has not yet issued an official statement regarding the issue or a timeline for a fix. Users experiencing this problem should ensure they are running the latest version of the google app, although this has not proven to be a universal solution. Monitoring for updates to both the Google app and the Pixel Launcher is recommended.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
