Port Moresby Unveils PNG Chiefs Identity Amid Legal Challenge
The Papua New Guinea Chiefs launched their inaugural logo and supporter jersey in Port Moresby, pushing ahead with preparations for their 2028 National Rugby League debut despite an ongoing trademark battle with New Zealand Rugby. The ceremony at the Hilton featured development players Gairo Voro, Morea Morea, and Finley Glare modeling a striking black strip alongside a white alternative kit in front of dignitaries including PNG Prime Minister James Marape and Australian officials.
Court Rejects Urgent Injunction Over Trademark Dispute
The franchise branding launch proceeded just days after New Zealand’s High Court rejected an urgent application for an interim injunction brought by New Zealand Rugby. Justice Karen Grau ruled during a Friday hearing in Wellington that the two entities are clearly distinct, noting that one team is based in Hamilton, New Zealand, while the other is based in Papua New Guinea and competes in a different sport and competition. ARL commissioner general Peter Beattie stated that they plan to continue fighting for the name, with further court action expected.
Cultural Symbolism Behind the Franchise Crest
Designed by local graphic artists, the club logo incorporates four core cultural elements representing the nation. The crest features a feather headpiece denoting earned status, a cassowary bone symbolizing warrior courage, a face shaped like the country and kina shells signifying wealth and islands. The supporter jersey integrates traditional artwork created by Papua New Guinean artist TABU. Foundation corporate partners for the 2028 season include BSP, PNG LNG, Coca-Cola, Nambawan Super, SP Lager, Struddys, Taylor Pacific, Ela Motors, and K92 Mining.
Australian Government Backs Club with 600 Million Package
The club has already secured seven players for its 2028 inaugural season, featuring former Kiwis star Joey Manu, NRL record tryscorer Alex Johnston, Jarome Luai, Brian To’o, Connor Watson, Zac Lomax, and Matty Lees. The venture is backed by the Australian government through a AU$600 million package, which includes AU$290 million allocated directly to the Chiefs over a 10-year period.
