Pointe-Claire Remembers Alain Nadeau, 52 Years After Tragic Drowning

Pointe-Claire, Quebec – On Friday, March 6, 2026, the city of Pointe-Claire inaugurated a stone memorial honoring Alain Nadeau, a six-year-traditional boy who tragically drowned in Terra Cotta Park 52 years prior. The ceremony, attended by Nadeau’s family and Pointe-Claire Mayor John Belvedere, marked a moment of closure and remembrance for a community deeply affected by the loss.

A Day of Play Turned Tragic

On March 6, 1974, Alain Nadeau was playing with a group of children near a stream in the southeast portion of Terra Cotta Park, close to the Glanlynn Ave. Entrance. The stream, a popular attraction for local children, was swollen with fast-moving water due to the spring thaw and runoff from melting snow and surrounding marshes as reported by Yahoo News. Brad Wilson, who was four years old at the time and present during the incident, recalled the suddenness of the tragedy.

“There was a group of maybe five, six or seven of us playing,” Wilson said. “I think we were throwing sticks in the water, as boys will do. And I remember at one point, he wasn’t there. He was gone in the blink of an eye.”

Nadeau was swept away by the current, carried into a collection pipe and ultimately ended up in Lake St-Louis.

Changes to Terra Cotta Park

The conditions that contributed to the tragedy in 1974 were different from those present today. In the 1970s, before significant development in Kirkland and Pointe-Claire, the stream experienced a much stronger current during the spring thaw according to reports. Nowadays, the stream’s flow is considerably lower during the same season.

A Memorial and a Family’s Grief

The inauguration of the stone memorial was a deeply emotional event for the Nadeau family. Lucille Girard Nadeau, Alain’s mother, was present, along with his brothers, Pierre and Luc, and his sister, Guylaine. Alain’s eldest brother, Yves, and his father, Claude, have since passed away.

Mayor John Belvedere expressed the city’s commitment to remembering the tragedy and supporting the family. He stated, “It’s a tragedy, and the family needs closure, so I’m very proud of this.”
