Nintendo is gearing up to release two latest mainline Pokémon games, Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027. Announced in February 2026, these titles mark the beginning of Generation X in the Pokémon franchise and promise a fresh adventure with an open world to explore.

What are Pokémon Winds and Waves?

Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are the primary paired versions of the upcoming Generation X Pokémon games. The official website describes them as featuring a vast open world comprised of beautiful windswept islands and a glittering ocean. The games will be playable in eleven languages: Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, European Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Bulbapedia notes this will be the first core series game with a Brazilian Portuguese translation.

Release Date

Both Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are scheduled for a worldwide release in 2027. GameSpot points out that this means the games will launch after the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise.

Gameplay and Setting

The games will take place in a new region characterized by coastal and island environments. The announcement trailer showcases Pokémon living in harmony with the lush environment, having developed unique ecosystems. Players will be able to team up with Pokémon to overcome challenges and even the forces of nature.

Starter Pokémon

Players will have a choice of three starter Pokémon:

• Browt: The Bean Chick Pokémon (Grass-type) – Runs energetically although photosynthesizing.
• Pombon: The Puppy Pokémon (Fire-type) – Has a heat-generating organ and is described as guileless, and friendly.
• Gecqua: The Water Gecko Pokémon (Water-type)

Confirmed Pokémon

In addition to the starter Pokémon, several other Pokémon have been confirmed to appear in the games, including Oddish, Corsola, Sandygast, and Wingull. The Pokémon Company has released images showcasing these Pokémon in the new region.
