Pope Leo Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Ukraine as Conflict Enters Fifth Year

VATICAN CITY – Pope Leo issued a fervent plea for peace in Ukraine on Sunday, February 22, 2026, marking the eve of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The Pope stated that an end to the conflict “cannot be postponed” as diplomatic efforts continue.

International Efforts and Russian Casualties

The United States has been involved in efforts to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, but progress has been limited. Russia is reportedly demanding that Ukraine cede control of parts of the eastern Donbas region, a condition Kyiv has rejected.

Recent reports indicate that Russia is sustaining significant losses in the conflict.
