Pope Francis-Commissioned Studies Advocate Modernized Priest Training, Greater Female Inclusion

Vatican City – Two working groups commissioned by Pope Francis have released recommendations calling for significant changes to the training of Catholic priests, emphasizing a more people-oriented approach and greater inclusion of women in the formation process. The groups, part of a larger initiative to address sensitive future issues for the Church, focused on priestly formation and the Church’s presence in the digital space.

People-Oriented Training for Future Priests

The study group on priestly formation argues that future priests should be trained to engage with individuals – both clergy and laypeople – in everyday life. This necessitates a shift away from solely seminary-based training to include practical experience within parishes and other church institutions. The committee also highlighted the importance of developing intercultural, interreligious and ecumenical competence, potentially through international experiences.

Transparency, accountability, and evaluation are also key components of the proposed training. The group emphasized the need to involve future priests in decision-making processes and to foster “ordinary relationships with all members of God’s people,” promoting the development of “responsible and mature personalities, including in the areas of affectivity and sexuality.”

Women’s Indispensable Role in Formation

A central recommendation is the increased involvement of women in all levels of priestly training. The experts advocate for well-prepared and competent women to be included as co-responsible participants, recognizing their “indispensable contribution to finding vocations and supporting the seminarians.” Shared responsibility for evaluating candidates, with input from those at seminarians’ places of study and work, is also proposed, with particular emphasis on the perspective and judgment of women.

Navigating the Digital Landscape

The study group examining the Church’s role in the digital space recommends integrating “digital mission” into existing church structures. It also calls for clarity regarding responsibility for “online parishes” and suggests training seminarians in digital culture.

Further reports from the remaining working groups are scheduled to be published on March 10th, according to the Vatican Synod Secretariat.
