A few months after its official premiere, Porsche has this week started series production of the Cayenne Electric at its Bratislava plant.
German media reports that the electric Cayenne is being built on the same line as the petrol and hybrid versions, giving the manufacturer the ability to quickly adapt to demand in different markets.
A significant difference from previous electric models is the assembly of batteries. While the batteries for the Taycan and Macan were delivered ready-made, in the case of the Cayenne Electric, Porsche carries out this process itself. The Porsche Smart Battery Shop in Slovakia assembles battery modules from LG Energy Solution cells, ensuring full quality control. These modules are later integrated into battery packs that go to the car factory.
The battery of the Cayenne Electric is designed as a load-bearing structural element that provides a range of more than 600 kilometers and supports 800-volt fast charging. Thanks to a special cooling system, charging from 10 to 80 percent takes about 16 minutes, which is faster than most competitors.
The factory in Bratislava has been significantly modernized – the body parts are pressed on site, and the new platform hall allows efficient construction of the electric Cayenne chassis. The Porsche management emphasizes that this way the company combines the DNA of the sporty brand with future technologies and high production quality.
At the same time, uncertainty reigns over the other planned electric series of Porsche cars, as there is a possibility that the electric 718 Boxster and Cayman will not reach the market at all. Their development has been hampered by technical difficulties, rising costs and a disrupted battery supply chain following Northvolt’s troubles. A final decision has not yet been made, but these projects are now in serious jeopardy.
