Portuguese Man Charged with Espionage After Attempting to Sell NATO Data to Russia

A 23-year-vintage Portuguese man has been formally accused of attempted espionage for allegedly attempting to sell sensitive information stolen from NATO military computer equipment to the Russian Embassy in Lisbon. The case, which unfolded last year, highlights ongoing concerns about foreign intelligence operations and data security.

The Incident

The alleged espionage began during the “Initial Planning Conference” held at the Naval School in Alfeite, Almada, between February 3 and 7, 2025 United24media. This conference, described as the “world’s largest exercise dedicated to robotic experimentation with unmanned systems” for 2025, drew approximately 300 participants, primarily military personnel.

According to prosecutors, the suspect, who had a history of theft, deliberately booked a room at the same hotel as NATO personnel attending the conference POLITICO. He then allegedly stole a computer and an iPad belonging to NATO and the Swedish Navy, which had been assigned to a military officer from the Alliance.

Believing the devices contained classified material, the suspect attempted to access and copy the data with the intention of collaborating with the Russian Federation Plataforma Media.
