The Powerball lottery is expanding its reach, as tickets become available for purchase in the United Kingdom starting Tuesday. This change allows U.K.-based players to participate in the same drawings as U.S. participants, competing for the same multi-state jackpot while facing the same 1 in 292.2 million odds of winning the top prize.
Powerball Expansion and U.K. Participation
The initiative follows an agreement between the Multi-State Lottery Association in the U.S. and Allwyn UK, the operator of the U.K. National Lottery. While Powerball has long been a staple in 45 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, this marks the first instance of a non-U.S. lottery jurisdiction contributing directly to the jackpot pool.
Wednesday’s drawing will serve as the first event open to U.K. players. According to lottery officials, the goal of this expansion is to increase the player base, which is expected to help jackpots grow more rapidly and potentially drive higher sales through larger advertised grand prizes.
Differences in Prize Structures and Mechanics
Although U.K. and U.S. players share the same odds and drawing schedule—Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays—the actual experience of winning will differ due to regional regulations and financial systems.

- Ticket Costs and Prizes: Powerball tickets are priced at $2. In the U.K., these purchases contribute exclusively to the main Powerball jackpot. U.K. players will not participate in the standard U.S. lower-tier prize structures, instead adhering to a separate prize framework.
- Currency and Taxation: Advertised jackpot amounts will vary between the two regions. This discrepancy arises from currency conversion rates and the fact that U.S. jackpots are advertised as pretax amounts.
- Payout Methods: U.S. winners typically choose between a lump-sum cash payment or an annuity spread over 30 years, with the majority selecting the cash option. For U.K. participants, the Powerball jackpots are structured to be paid out over a 30-year period.
Historical Context of Lottery Jackpots
The Powerball game requires players to select five white balls numbered 1 to 69 and one red Powerball number from 1 to 26. The largest prize in the game’s history remains the $2.04 billion jackpot claimed in 2022 by a ticket sold in California.
In comparison, the EuroMillions lottery, which is also operated in the U.K. by Allwyn and spans nine European countries, has different prize ceilings. In 2025, that lottery awarded a maximum of 250 million euros—approximately $285 million—to winners across France, Ireland, and Austria. The introduction of Powerball provides U.K. residents access to significantly higher potential jackpots than those typically found in existing European lottery games.
