Gaza pregnancy miscarriages have surged amid ongoing conflict, displacement, and extreme summer temperatures inside makeshift shelters, according to data released by Gaza’s Health Ministry. Health officials recorded 3,958 miscarriages during the first half of 2026, pointing to severe humanitarian conditions that threaten maternal and fetal health across the region.
Surging Miscarriage Rates in Gaza Tents
Figures from Gaza’s Health Ministry show that the rate reached 208.5 miscarriage cases per 1,000 live births in the first half of 2026. This represents a significant increase compared to 64 cases per 1,000 live births recorded in the second half of 2025, marking a 3.3-fold rise over the span of several months.
Pregnant women face repeated displacement, widespread malnutrition, limited access to medical care, heavy physical labor, and extreme heat trapped inside poorly ventilated plastic tents.
Daily Hardships Facing Pregnant Women
Palestinian women living in temporary shelters endure grueling physical routines without access to running water, reliable electricity, or cooling systems. Hadeel al-Madani, a seven-month pregnant resident living in a tent, described the daily toll of fetching water, washing clothes by hand, and lighting fires for cooking.
“Our life is difficult. We cannot adapt. Life is tragic and very hard for pregnant women in tents,” Madani told Anadolu. She expressed constant anxiety over her fetus, noting that intense heat and poor sanitation inside the shelter raise fears of developmental problems or birth defects.
Similarly, Doaa al-Najjar, who is in her ninth month of pregnancy, reported suffering severe health complications due to high temperatures inside her tent. Najjar told Anadolu that she recently sought medical treatment at a local health clinic after experiencing a dangerous rise in body temperature.
“I feel afraid for the pregnancy, and I’m affected by these conditions,” Najjar said, adding that she lacks basic supplies for her expected newborn, including a proper bed, clothing, diapers, and milk.
Impact of Infrastructure Failures and Heat
The humanitarian crisis has intensified due to continuous power outages and high summer temperatures. Poor-quality plastic fabric used in many tents turns the shelters into stifling environments during the day, exacerbating physical exhaustion and health risks for vulnerable populations.
Medical and humanitarian observers continue to monitor the escalating risks facing expectant mothers as access to stable healthcare infrastructure remains heavily constrained throughout the territory.
