Prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides does not show a significant association with autism-related traits in children, according to a nationwide study published on August 24, 2026, in JAMA Pediatrics. Led by researchers at NYU Langone Health, the investigation evaluated more than 3,300 mother-child pairs to determine whether common agricultural chemicals influence social communication and behavioral development.
The findings offer one of the largest and most diverse examinations to date regarding low-level environmental chemical exposures during pregnancy. While prior epidemiological research has linked organophosphates to reduced IQ, impaired cognition, and attention difficulties, the new multisite analysis found no major driving effect on autism-related characteristics between the ages of approximately 5 and 7.
Study Design and Multisite Cohort Analysis
The research team utilized data from the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program, a research network supported by the National Institutes of Health. According to the study, investigators analyzed 3,339 mother-child pairs recruited through 20 medical centers across the United States. This geographic diversity allowed scientists to control for broad socioeconomic conditions, health histories, maternal characteristics, and environmental variables.
To estimate prenatal exposure, researchers examined urine samples collected from mothers during pregnancy. Laboratory tests looked for specific metabolites—short-lived compounds produced as the human body breaks down organophosphates—rather than the original pesticide molecules. These biomarkers confirmed widespread, low-level exposure, with organophosphate-related metabolites detected in 99 percent of the participating mothers. Outside of agricultural and occupational settings, people in the United States may encounter these chemicals primarily through food sources like conventionally grown fruits and vegetables.
Behavioral Evaluation Using the Social Responsiveness Scale
To measure neurodevelopmental outcomes, researchers compared the maternal metabolite concentrations with children’s scores on the Social Responsiveness Scale. This 65-item questionnaire evaluates social communication difficulties and behaviors associated with autism along a continuum rather than using a binary diagnosis. The scale measures traits such as reduced eye contact, difficulty interpreting other people’s emotions, challenges in reciprocal social interaction, and a strong preference for routines.
According to the authors, the results do not establish that organophosphate pesticides are harmless. However, the data suggest that the specific exposure levels measured within this nationwide cohort did not function as a primary driver of autism-related traits during early childhood.
Context and Divergent Findings in Agricultural Populations
The conclusions of the JAMA Pediatrics study contrast with certain previous investigations conducted in localized agricultural regions. For instance, research from the Center for Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas (CHAMACOS) birth cohort in California’s Salinas Valley previously reported associations between prenatal dialkyl phosphate metabolites and poorer parent- and teacher-reported social behaviors at later developmental stages, such as ages 7, 10½, and 14.

Scientists note that differences in population exposure levels, geographic environments, and assessment timelines may account for variations between nationwide cohorts and high-exposure agricultural communities. While the ECHO Program analysis found no significant link across its diverse national sample during early childhood, ongoing monitoring of environmental chemical safety and child neurodevelopment remains a focus of public health research.
