President Catherine Connolly Opens Christy Moore Exhibition in Dublin
President of Ireland Catherine Connolly officially opened a major new exhibition exploring the life and music of singer-songwriter Christy Moore at the Irish Traditional Music Archive in Merrion Square, Dublin. Titled Christy Moore: How Do Songs Live?, the exhibition was unveiled on October 6th, drawing on materials from Moore’s personal archive donated to the archive in 2023. The collection spans more than six decades of the musician’s career.
Six Decades of Archives and 188 New Recordings
The exhibition features lyric notebooks, correspondence, recordings, setlists, photographs, and press materials. As part of his donation, Moore recorded 188 songs in the archive’s studio, sharing personal stories and memories connected with them. Visitors can listen to these recordings directly as part of the exhibition.
President Connolly praised the musician’s enduring impact during the launch event. She stated that Moore’s voice has spent decades standing in solidarity with those facing challenges and oppression, providing a vital commentary on the lives of Irish people and major historical struggles.
Archive Director Liam O’Connor noted that the collection is an important gift to the Irish people from an artist cherished by lovers of Irish song globally. Moore himself expressed enthusiasm for the digital accessibility of the project, stating that he loves the idea of young people in Australia, America, Clare, or Belfast being able to log on, find the words, and hear the tunes and melodies.
