- Expanded Network: Prime Healthcare now operates nine hospitals in the Chicagoland region and 55 hospitals across 15 states.
- Strategic Fit: The acquisition followed a rigorous review by Franciscan Alliance focusing on mission alignment and ethical care.
- Proven Track Record: The Review Board praised Prime’s history of stabilizing financially distressed hospitals and investing in expanded services.
Regulatory Approval and Board Support
The acquisition was finalized following a unanimous 8-0 vote by the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board. During the proceedings, board members, elected officials, and community representatives praised Prime Healthcare’s commitment to strengthening the Illinois healthcare landscape through strategic investment and service-line expansions.
The Review Board specifically highlighted Prime’s demonstrated ability to turn around financially distressed hospitals. Members noted the organization’s consistency in fulfilling commitments to Illinois communities and its focus on providing patient-centered, quality care.
A Rigorous Selection Process
The transition of ownership was not a sudden decision but the result of a detailed evaluation by the Franciscan Alliance. According to Kevin Leahy, President and CEO of Franciscan Alliance, the organization conducted a comprehensive review process that included deep due diligence.
“Franciscan Alliance selected Prime Healthcare following a comprehensive review process that included due diligence and careful evaluation of mission alignment, ethical commitment, and long-term sustainability,” Leahy stated.
Leahy further emphasized that Prime’s existing experience operating Catholic hospitals within Illinois, combined with its reputation for ethical care delivery and community service, were central factors in the decision to partner with the system.
Expanding National and Local Reach
With the addition of Franciscan Health Olympia Fields, Prime Healthcare continues to scale its operations both locally, and nationally. The system now manages nine hospitals in the Chicagoland area, contributing to a broader national network of 55 hospitals spanning 15 states.

This growth is backed by a record of quality care. Prime Healthcare has been recognized as a 10 Top Health System by Truven Health Analytics, and its facilities are consistently ranked among the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals.
Looking Ahead
The acquisition is expected to bring increased stability and expanded medical services to the Olympia Fields community. By leveraging its experience in hospital turnarounds and quality management, Prime Healthcare aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the facility while maintaining the high standards of ethical care established by the Franciscan Alliance.
