Prince William Honors Princess Diana on Mother’s Day with Previously Unseen Photo
The Prince of Wales shared a touching tribute to his late mother, Princess Diana, on Mother’s Day, posting a previously unseen photograph of the pair together. The image, taken in 1984 at Highgrove, Gloucestershire, shows a two-year-old Prince William with his mother in a field of flowers.
Prince William accompanied the photo with a heartfelt message on social media: “Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day. W.”
A Poignant Remembrance
The photograph evokes memories of a similar image featuring King Charles III with his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, in a poppy field at Highgrove, which was used on the family’s 1994 Christmas card. This connection highlights the enduring legacy of Diana, Princess of Wales, within the royal family.
Prince William was 15 years old when his mother died on August 31, 1997, following a car crash in Paris. Diana was 36 years old at the time of her death and would have celebrated her 65th birthday on July 1.
Continuing the Tradition with His Own Children
The Prince of Wales has previously spoken about his children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, creating cards each year to remember their “Granny Diana” on Mother’s Day. In 2021, Kensington Palace shared examples of these heartfelt cards.
Princess Charlotte, then five years old, wrote: “Dear Granny Diana I am thinking of you on Mother’s Day. I love you very much. Papa is missing you. Lots of love Charlotte xxxxxxxxx.” Her brother, Prince George, aged seven at the time, penned: “Dear Granny Diana, Happy, happy mothers day. I love you very much and think of you always, Sending lots of love from George xxxxx.” Young Prince Louis, then three, created a card featuring a painted heart adorned with animal stickers.
Royal Family Joins in Remembrance
The Royal Family’s official social media account as well shared a series of throwback photos to mark Mother’s Day. These included images of the late Queen Elizabeth with her mother, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and a photo of Queen Camilla with her late mother, Rosalind Shand.
The accompanying caption read: “Wishing Mothers everywhere, and those who might be missing their Mums today, a restful Mothering Sunday.”
