Amateur Programmer Uses Artificial Intelligence to Propose a Zodiac Killer Identity
Artificial intelligence generated 71 million potential names from a short encrypted message left by the Zodiac Killer, according to a report by slate.fr. Amateur programmer Alex Baber ran the program against historical documents such as Social Security numbers and birth certificates to decode the message known as Z13.
Filtering Millions of Potential Names Down to a Single Match
The program eliminated roughly 93% of the generated names because historical records showed those individuals never existed. Baber then filtered the remaining candidates against the physical descriptions of the Zodiac Killer, who investigators described as a white man, middle-aged, and approximately 1.83 meters tall. That process yielded the name Marvin Merrill, which matches an alias used by Marvin Skipton Margolis. Margolis was previously a suspect in the 1947 murder of Elizabeth Short, an unsolved case widely known as the Black Dahlia.
Cryptographers Question the Limits of Short Ciphers
German computer scientist and cryptology author Klaus Schmeh expressed doubts about the proposed solution, telling slate.fr that the Z13 message is practically undecipherable due to its extreme brevity of 13 characters. Schmeh noted that the message is simply too short and leaves far too many possibilities open for a definitive match. Despite his skepticism regarding the Z13 result, Schmeh acknowledged that AI tools show significant potential for cracking decades-old cryptographic puzzles.
Historical Ciphers Fall to Automated Decryption Tools
Cybersecurity researcher Eren Bozbulut used artificial intelligence in late September to decode five encrypted messages left by German spy Walter Koehler during World War II, slate.fr reported. Weeks later, Russian engineer Anton Zaytsev decrypted a hidden message found inside a glass bottle in Kaliningrad from the Cold War era. Artificial intelligence programs are also beginning to assist researchers in translating ancient writing systems, including cuneiform and Linear A.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Zodiac Z13 Cipher
What is the Z13 cipher?
The Z13 is the shortest of four encrypted messages sent to the press by the Zodiac Killer. It consists of 13 characters preceded by the typed phrase “My name is…”.
How did the programmer process the generated names?
Alex Baber cross-referenced 71 million AI-generated names with historical birth certificates and Social Security records before filtering the results using the suspect’s physical descriptions.
Who is Marvin Skipton Margolis?
Marvin Skipton Margolis was a suspect in the 1947 Black Dahlia murder case involving Elizabeth Short, and used the alias Marvin Merrill.
