Broadcaster and author Prue Leith was rushed to Harrogate Hospital in an ambulance after her husband, John Playfair, feared she was experiencing a stroke while they were away in Yorkshire, according to reports published in The Oldie and covered by outlets including Digital Spy and the Daily Mail.

Hospitalization and Stroke Scare in Yorkshire

The 86-year-old former Great British Baking Show judge suffered a severe migraine attack that temporarily impaired her vision and speech, according to her column in The Oldie. Leith explained that the incident followed a familiar pattern where she lost sight in half of her field of vision, followed by a bright circle of flickering colored lights. However, the episode escalated when her speech became an incomprehensible jumble of disconnected words, prompting Playfair to dial 999 out of concern that she was having a stroke.

“This time, my incomprehensible jumble of disconnected words convinced John I was having a stroke,” Leith wrote, according to Digital Spy. “I tried to tell him it was just a migraine, but I couldn’t string two words together.”

Medical Evaluation and NHS Care

Paramedics transported Leith to Harrogate Hospital as a precautionary measure. Medical staff performed a CT scan after a six-hour wait in the A&E department, which ultimately confirmed she had not suffered a stroke. Leith was discharged in the early hours of the morning.

Reflecting on the experience, Leith praised the National Health Service personnel for their professionalism. “You may have to wait forever, but when it is your turn, you are treated as if you were the only patient in A&E,” she wrote, as reported by Digital Spy. She noted that because speech impairment is a classic symptom of a stroke and her age makes mini-strokes common, medical staff were determined to take a safety-first approach.

Recent Career Shifts

Nigella Lawson is set to replace Leith when the new series airs on Channel 4 later this year. Leith stated that she decided to step back to enjoy her garden during the summers and pursue other projects.
