PlayStation Portal Gains 1080p High Quality Mode and Enhanced Cloud Streaming Features

Sony continues to refine the PlayStation Portal remote player, with a new system software update rolling out globally on March 17 (PDT) / March 18 (CET and JST). The update introduces improvements designed to deliver higher visual fidelity, smoother interactions, and a more seamless overall experience for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming.

Since the last update in November, PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming monthly users have grown by 162% year-over-year as of January 2026, and over 50% of PlayStation Portal users are now PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers 1, demonstrating increasing engagement with cloud gaming.

1080p High Quality Mode

Players can now select a 1080p High Quality mode during both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. This new mode provides a higher bitrate compared to the default 1080p Standard mode, resulting in a smoother and more visually detailed gaming experience 1.

To enable the 1080p High Quality mode, navigate to [Quick Menu] > [Max Resolution] and select [1080p High Quality] during Remote Play or Cloud Streaming. A restart of the Remote Play / Cloud Streaming session is required to apply the change.

Refined Cloud Streaming Experience

Several enhancements have been implemented to improve usability and reduce friction during Cloud Streaming sessions:

  • Improved Product Detail Page: When selecting “Stream” on game bundle detail pages, a new user interface (UI) will appear, allowing players to choose a specific game to play from within the bundle.
  • Game Invite Notifications: Players actively streaming a supported title will now receive clear on-screen notifications for incoming game invites, ensuring they don’t miss opportunities to play with friends.
  • Enhanced Trophy Notifications: Trophy notifications now display the trophy name and associated image upon unlocking. Platinum trophies will also feature their special animation, providing greater visibility and celebration of achievements.
  • Improved Search Screen: The search interface has been refined for a smoother experience, with the On Screen Keyboard now immediately available when initiating a search.

Smoother Onboarding Experience

The process of getting started with PlayStation Portal has been simplified for new users. An improved UI and onboarding flow now allows users to quickly create a PlayStation account and sign in to their PS Portal by scanning a QR code with their mobile device 1.

PlayStation Portal Remote Player requires a broadband internet Wi-Fi connection with at least 5Mbps for use, with a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps recommended for an optimal experience 2. Cloud Streaming requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription 2.

1 Data as of December 2025 to January 2026.
