PS5 System Update 14.0: PSSR 2.0 and Stability Improvements Coming Soon

Sony Interactive Entertainment is preparing the public rollout of system software update version 14.0 for the PlayStation 5 family of consoles, bringing default neural network scaling and new wireless restrictions. According to hardware reporting from GameGPU, beta benchmarking for the upcoming firmware started with a noticeable delay compared to previous release schedules, but the official deployment to all users is slated for the end of this month.

PSSR 2.0 Neural Network Scaling Automation

The central technical change in update 14.0 is the automatic activation of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) 2.0 enhanced neural network scaling switch, according to GameGPU. Previously, hardware owners had to manually locate and enable the option within the system menu. Under the new firmware, machine upscaling technology activates by default at the basic rendering settings level. GameGPU reports that this scaling enhancement impacts projects with basic integration of the technology, eliminating visual artifacts and geometry flickering without requiring separate patches from game developers.

Wireless Connection Management and Esports Restrictions

Developers have adjusted wireless connection management rules in the new software, introducing a restriction that prevents the console from entering idle mode when the Bluetooth module is completely disabled. According to GameGPU, disabling the wireless adapter also causes the HDMI Link communication protocol to cease functioning. This restriction mirrors setups used in esports tournaments to prevent controller signal interference in crowded arenas, where organizers deliberately turn off wireless capabilities.

System Optimization and Release Timeline

Alongside feature updates, the benchmark build focuses on internal service optimization and platform stability improvements, accompanied by a scheduled performance calibration of the graphics shell. While developers typically reserve certain user-facing features for the final public release, the complete update package arrives for all users by the end of the month, according to GameGPU reporting.
