PSNI Investigation into Presbyterian Church Safeguarding Concerns Continues, Receives 101 Referrals
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is continuing its investigation into safeguarding concerns within the Presbyterian Church in Ireland (PCI), having received 101 referrals to date. The investigation, which began in November 2025, includes direct reports from victims, as well as referrals from safeguarding partners and other parties.
Investigation Remains a Priority
Detective Chief Superintendent Zoë McKee, Head of the PSNI’s Public Protection Branch, confirmed that the investigation remains a priority for the police service. She stated that all information received is being carefully assessed in line with established investigative, safeguarding and evidential procedures. PSNI Statement
Focus on Victims and Criminality
The PSNI’s primary focus is on providing the best possible service to those affected by the safeguarding failures and on investigating any criminal activity. Detectives are appealing to anyone with information relating to safeguarding concerns known by or reported to the PCI to approach forward. Church Response and Leadership Changes
The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, Right Reverend Dr Richard Murray, expressed sadness at the number of referrals but welcomed the clarity brought by the ongoing criminal investigation. The PCI has apologized to those who have suffered or been harmed due to past inactions or inadequate responses. BBC News
In November, the church’s moderator Rev Trevor Gribben resigned following an internal report that revealed “serious and significant failings” in safeguarding between 2009, and 2022. The church has since agreed to establish a new three-person senior leadership team, including a new Clerk of the General Assembly with revised responsibilities, a Deputy Clerk, and a new Director of Operations position. The PSNI has confirmed it has been in contact with An Garda Síochána regarding the possibility of victims on both sides of the border. The Presbyterian Church in Ireland has over 185,000 members across more than 500 congregations on the island of Ireland.
