Police Investigate Six Unnotified Processions Across Northern Ireland

Police in Northern Ireland are investigating six unnotified public processions that took place across the region over the past week, including loyalist protests and a community victory gathering. Assistant Chief Constable Anthony McNally stated that while public processions are a fundamental human right, they must be balanced against the need to prevent disorder, protect public safety, and comply with lawful notification requirements under the Public Processions Act.

Protests Erupt After Drumcree Parading Dispute Decisions

The latest police inquiries follow a nearly two-week stand-off in Portadown sparked by a Parades Commission ruling that would have permitted an Orange Order parade to complete its traditional route down the Garvaghy Road for the first time in almost 30 years. Because numerous demonstrators blocked the Garvaghy Road, the march could not proceed as planned, prompting Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant to reverse the commission’s ruling. Jon Boutcher, the Chief Constable, previously warned that individuals found to have violated the law would face “consequences”.

Several political figures have since been interviewed by officers regarding their presence at the demonstrations. People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll attended Musgrave police station for an interview lasting more than 90 minutes before telling reporters he was exercising his right to free expression and peaceful assembly. Mr Carroll confirmed he attended voluntarily and denies any criminal offending. First Minister Michelle O’Neill and multiple Sinn Féin MLAs have also received letters from the police concerning their attendance at the Garvaghy Road protests.

Loyalist Demonstrations and Camogie Celebrations Under Scrutiny

The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed inquiries into six unnotified events held throughout the week. These comprise loyalist parades in Bangor, the Shankill Road and Tennent Street in Belfast, loyalist protests in Derry’s Waterside area and in Newtownabbey, and a gathering in Dunloy. Some loyalist groups have withdrawn cooperation from both the police and the Parades Commission following the banning of the Drumcree march.

The gathering under investigation in Dunloy involved local street celebrations last Sunday evening after the Dunloy Cuchullains camogie team won the Antrim senior camogie title for the first time in 23 years. Crowds gathered to cheer on the squad as they went through the village on an open-topped lorry, which was preceded by an accordion band. Police are examining whether the victory parade breached statutory notification rules.

Legal Defense and Ongoing Police Inquiries

Defending his actions outside the police station, Mr Carroll argued that millions of pounds had been wasted on policing Drumcree rather than engaging with community concerns. Any potential charges resulting from the ongoing investigations will ultimately be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
