What to Know About Public Financing in New Mexico’s Upcoming Primary Election New Mexico allows certain candidates to use public money for their campaigns, though it does not apply to high-profile races such as governor or state legislative seats. Under state law, only candidates for state and district court judge positions are eligible to receive public financing in the 2026 election cycle. The public financing program is designed to promote impartiality and reduce the influence of private donations in judicial elections. According to Mandy Vigil, New Mexico’s State Election Director, the goal is to eliminate the need for fundraising in offices where impartiality is essential. “Judges are someone that we all expect to be impartial and not really beholden to anyone for any reason,” Vigil told Source NM. Funds are held in the state’s Public Election Fund and are distributed only after the Secretary of State’s Office qualifies a candidate. To qualify, candidates must meet specific thresholds, including gathering a minimum number of $5 contributions from registered voters in their jurisdiction. New Mexico is one of 15 states that offer public financing options for elections, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. In past cycles, candidates for the Public Regulation Commission were similarly eligible, but current law limits eligibility to judicial offices. Voters participating in the June 2, 2026, primary election will see public financing in action only for judicial races. Early voting and Election Day voter hotlines remain available through the Secretary of State’s Office to assist with questions about the voting process and campaign finance rules.
