Punjab Establishes Anti-Drone Units Across All Districts

Punjab province is implementing a comprehensive counter-drone strategy, establishing dedicated “anti-drone units” in every district across the region. The initiative, approved by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif last week, marks a shift towards proactive security measures, moving beyond simply reacting to security incidents .

Chief Minister Sharif emphasized the need for preemptive action, stating that authorities must adopt policies focused on preventing terrorist incidents rather than solely responding to them . The new units will utilize specialized drone fleets for aerial surveillance of each district .

Each district will receive an “anti-drone system” overseen by the District Police Officer (DPO). The systems, along with surveillance drones, will be allocated based on the specific needs of each district . These systems will employ jammers designed to disable enemy or unauthorized drones .

The decision to establish these units comes in response to modern counter-terrorism requirements and aims to maintain law and order within the province . Existing Regulations and Exemptions

Punjab previously imposed a 30-day ban on drone and UAV flights starting February 25th. However, the ban excludes the use of small drones for indoor activities, such as coverage within halls or marquees, and does not apply to drones operated by intelligence and law enforcement agencies .
