Pure Lithium Receives Japanese Patent for Advanced Battery Technology

Chicago-based Pure Lithium Corporation has announced that it has been granted a foundational patent in Japan for its “Vertically Integrated Pure Lithium Metal Production and Lithium Battery Production” technology. This patent, previously secured in the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, signifies a major step forward for the company’s innovative approach to lithium metal battery manufacturing. Business Wire, LinkedIn, and NAMPA reported on the development.

Vertical Integration for Cost Reduction and Performance

The patented process centers around co-locating the manufacturing of high-purity lithium metal anodes and lithium metal batteries. Pure Lithium’s vertically integrated anode technology is designed to deliver exceptional battery performance. By integrating the entire production process, the company aims to capture margins at every stage and eliminate expenses related to transportation, handling, third-party markups, and material degradation, ultimately reducing overall battery production costs.

Japan’s Role in Battery Innovation

“I am honored that the Japanese patent office has recognized the importance and novelty of our technology,” stated Emilie Bodoin, Founder, Chairman, CEO, and sole inventor of the patent at Pure Lithium. Bodoin highlighted Japan’s pioneering role in the commercialization of lithium-ion batteries and expressed confidence that Pure Lithium’s technology can help Japan regain and expand its battery market share through next-generation lithium metal innovation. The company intends to continue pursuing broad intellectual property protection across Asia.

Lithium Metal Anodes: A Technological Leap

Lithium metal anodes represent a significant advancement over the graphite anodes currently used in lithium-ion batteries. Graphite constitutes approximately half the volume and weight of a traditional lithium-ion battery, with over 97% of global graphite supply originating from China. Lithium metal boasts a specific capacity ten times greater than graphite, potentially resulting in batteries that are at least twice as light and offer double the capacity of current lithium-ion technology.

A China-Independent Supply Chain

Pure Lithium’s battery technology is designed to be free of graphite, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, establishing a supply chain independent of China. The company sources materials locally, enabling battery production in global industrial hubs without being susceptible to volatile tariffs, export restrictions, and other supply chain disruptions.

Expanding Intellectual Property Portfolio

Pure Lithium has built a robust international intellectual property portfolio, encompassing over 140 patents and patent applications. The company is focused on producing the world’s first commercially viable lithium metal battery, targeting applications in grid-scale energy storage, data centers, micromobility, drones, personal electronics, and aerospace.
