Putin Condemns US-Israel Killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei
Russian President Vladimir Putin strongly condemned the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, labeling the act a “cynical violation” of international law and human morality. The condemnation came in a letter to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian following Saturday’s strikes carried out by the United States and Israel.
Putin’s Response
“Please accept my deep condolences in connection with the murder of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Ali Khamenei, and members of his family, committed in cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law,” Putin wrote in the letter released by the Kremlin according to Fox News. Putin also remembered Khamenei as an “outstanding statesman” who significantly contributed to the development of strong Russian-Iranian relations.
Details of the Strikes
Saturday’s strikes resulted in the deaths of Khamenei and several other high-ranking Iranian officials, including the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. Firstpost reports that Putin characterized the killing as a “cynical murder.”
International Reactions
Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, also condemned the joint U.S.-Israeli strikes during a U.N. Security Council meeting, accusing the U.S. Of undermining claims of pursuing international stability. Iravani argued that the strikes violated Iran’s sovereignty and were based on accusations of “domestic” activities. As reported by Fox News, Iravani stated that Iran would continue to exercise its right to self-defense.
U.S. Justification for the Strikes
President Donald Trump authorized the operation, known as Operation Epic Fury, citing Iran’s continued efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Trump stated that the strikes were intended to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime” and emphasized his administration’s policy of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities. Fox News detailed Trump’s remarks on the attack.
Russia-Iran Relations
Putin highlighted the strong ties between Russia and Iran, noting Khamenei’s personal contribution to their “comprehensive strategic partnership.” Firstpost noted that Russia and Iran signed a strategic treaty in 2025 aimed at strengthening their alliance, and Russia had previously called for restraint in the lead-up to the strikes.
