As the official campaign for the October 5, 2026 provincial election gets underway, Coalition Avenir Québec Leader Christine Fréchette has cast U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration’s trade policies as her party’s primary adversary. Party leaders across the political spectrum fanned out across Quebec on Thursday, August 27, 2026, to pitch their platforms to voters ahead of the fall vote.
Launching her first campaign since taking over leadership of the CAQ in April following François Legault’s resignation, Fréchette pointed to a clear blue sky at her opening event but warned that U.S. tariffs are casting storm clouds over key provincial industries. “My opponent is named Donald Trump,” Fréchette told supporters, framing her government as the experienced team needed to navigate economic uncertainty and protect jobs, businesses, and families in discussions with municipalities, businesses, First Nations and Inuit leaders, and the federal government.
CAQ Seeks Another Mandate Amid Opposition Critiques
The CAQ is seeking another mandate after eight years in power. Fréchette has worked to separate her leadership from the previous government, presenting a renewed approach and combination of experience and renewal to the electorate. However, the governing party currently trails the sovereigntist Parti Québécois in the polls.
Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon launched his campaign on a pier in his eastern Montreal riding, launching sharp criticisms against the past eight years of the CAQ administration. St-Pierre Plamondon highlighted failures in health care, homelessness, housing, French language protection, and costly investments in failed ventures, including the cancelled Northvolt electric battery plant. “Are we really going to go for 12 years of that?” he asked voters, urging a campaign focused on substantive issues rather than letting U.S. trade policies dominate the debate.
Sovereignty Referendum Debate
St-Pierre Plamondon also reiterated his commitment to holding a referendum on Quebec sovereignty within four years if the Parti Québécois forms government. According to his campaign statements, that vote would take place only after Trump leaves the White House, allowing the party first to demonstrate its capacity to properly manage and govern the province.
Alongside the CAQ and the PQ, the Quebec Liberal Party, Québec solidaire, and the Conservative Party of Quebec have launched their respective campaigns across the province, with voters set to head to the polls on October 5, 2026.
