Dame Meera Syal to Star in 10th Anniversary Production of ‘The Children’ at Lyric Hammersmith
The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre has announced a powerful new production of Lucy Kirkwood’s gripping drama, The Children. Marking the play’s 10th anniversary, the production will be directed by the venue’s Artistic Director, Rachel O’Riordan, and will star Olivier Award nominee Dame Meera Syal in the role of Hazel.
Scheduled to run from September 2 to October 3, 2026, the production brings a timely exploration of environmental catastrophe and moral responsibility to the London stage. Tickets are currently available via the official Lyric Hammersmith website.
A Story of Survival and Secrets
Set in a remote British coastal cottage on the edge of a radiation exclusion zone, The Children follows Hazel and Robin, two retired nuclear scientists attempting to maintain a sense of normality after a catastrophic event. While Hazel continues her yoga practice and Robin brews parsnip wine, their fragile peace is disrupted by the arrival of an old friend, Rose.
Rose arrives with a proposition that forces the trio to confront buried secrets and tests the limits of their loyalty. The play asks a haunting question: how far would individuals go to protect the next generation, and what is the cost of that protection?
The Vision Behind the Revival
Since its debut in 2016, The Children has evolved into a modern classic. Artistic Director Rachel O’Riordan believes the play’s core messages are more urgent now than they were a decade ago.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be bringing Luck Kirkwood’s thrilling play to the Lyric this September in its 10th anniversary production. Since its debut in 2016, it has become a modern classic and the themes of inter-generational accountability and environmental crisis have only become more relevant. It’s funny, moving and asks big questions around personal morality—what would any of us do if we were asked to do something so terrifying?”
For Dame Meera Syal, this production marks a significant return to the Lyric Hammersmith, where she previously appeared in the 2019 hit Noises Off. Syal expressed her excitement about the collaboration, stating, “I’m thrilled to be back at the Lyric Hammersmith and working with Rachel O’Riordan on Lucy Kirkwood’s brilliant, timely play.”
