Raducanu and Boulter to Miss Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup Qualifier Against Australia

Great Britain will be without key players Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter for their upcoming Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Australia in April. Both players have prioritized other commitments during the tie, scheduled for Melbourne on April 10-11.

Raducanu and Boulter’s Absences

Emma Raducanu, currently ranked British number one and 24th in the world, will compete in the WTA 500 clay-court tournament in Linz, Austria, during the same week. Katie Boulter, ranked 64th, will similarly miss the tie. As reported by the BBC, this marks the third successive time Raducanu has chosen not to participate in Billie Jean King Cup duty.

Squad Selection and Captain’s Comments

Great Britain captain Anne Keothavong has named Sonay Kartal, Harriet Dart, Jodie Burrage, and 17-year-old Mika Stojsavljevic in the squad. A fifth player may be added closer to the event. Keothavong acknowledged the challenge of persuading top players to travel to Australia given the start of the European clay court season, describing the best-of-five encounter as “tough.”

“We always embrace these weeks together as a team and will be up for the challenge,” Keothavong stated. According to the Express, she also expressed excitement about the opportunity for Stojsavljevic to join the senior team for the first time.

Australia’s Squad

Australia has also announced its squad, including Talia Gibson, Maya Joint, Storm Hunter, Kimberly Birrell, and Ellen Perez. Gibson’s inclusion follows a strong performance at Indian Wells, where she defeated three top-20 players en route to the quarter-finals.

Looking Ahead

The Billie Jean King Cup finals will be held in Shenzhen in September. Great Britain reached the semi-finals of the competition last year. The BBC reports that the competition will take place the week beginning September 21st.
