Former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. became the most heavily pursued player on the NFL waiver wire following the league’s 53-man roster deadline.
High Demand on the NFL Waiver Wire
The Las Vegas Raiders held the No. 1 position in the waiver claim order following the initial 53-man roster cuts. While the team selected just one player during that initial waiver wave, that player drew intense competition from across the league. According to CBS Sports, Luter attracted claims from four other organizations: the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, and Indianapolis Colts.
Under NFL rules, players cut with fewer than four accrued seasons must pass through waivers. Any club can submit a claim, but claimed players automatically occupy a spot on the 53-man active roster, requiring the claiming team to make a corresponding roster cut. To make room for Luter, the Raiders parted ways with cornerback Decamerion Richardson, according to Raiders Wire and Silver & Black Pride.
Darrell Luter Jr.’s Career Path and Background
The San Francisco 49ers originally selected Luter in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of South Alabama. During his rookie season, he appeared in seven regular-season games and contributed on special teams as the 49ers reached Super Bowl LVIII. In that game against the Kansas City Chiefs, a notable postseason lowlight occurred when a punt from Tommy Townsend struck Luter’s foot in the third quarter, leading to a Chiefs recovery and a subsequent touchdown drive. The 49ers ultimately lost the game in overtime, 25-22.
Injuries limited Luter’s second professional season to just three games and three tackles before he was placed on injured reserve. During the subsequent preseason, he added three tackles and four passes defensed.
The 49ers ultimately chose other cornerbacks—including Nate Hobbs, Renardo Green, Upton Stout, Jack Jones, Ephesians Prysock, Deommodore Lenoir, and Siran Neal—for their initial roster, leaving Luter available on waivers.
