Ram Gopal Varma Declares ‘Dhurandhar 2’ a Reset Button for Indian Cinema

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has lauded Aditya Dhar’s ‘Dhurandhar 2,’ proclaiming it a potential turning point for Indian cinema. Varma’s praise extends to the film’s realistic portrayal of heroism, contrasting it with the often-exaggerated action sequences prevalent in Bollywood.

Varma’s Strong Endorsement

Varma has consistently expressed his admiration for Dhar’s function, beginning with the release of the first ‘Dhurandhar’ film in December 2025. He initially stated the first film “redraws the grammar of mainstream Indian cinema.” Following the release of the sequel, Varma has been even more emphatic, calling ‘Dhurandhar 2’ a “reset button” for the industry.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Varma stated, “The #Dhurandhar2 is not a film .. It is a RESET BUTTON for INDIAN CINEMA ..it will be foolish on all film makers part not to forget all films which were made before March 19 th 2026 and starting from March 19 th 2026 onwards everybody should bench mark all their to be made films with #Dhurandhar2 or else they will PERISH in it’s FIRE.”

He further commented that the film would “terrify those who built their careers on action set pieces where physics is a joke and gravity is non existent.”

‘Dhurandhar 2’ – A Shift in Storytelling

Varma’s praise centers on the film’s grounded approach to action and character development. He specifically highlighted Ranveer Singh’s portrayal of Hamza Ali Mazari as a realistic hero—one who “bleeds and hurts”—a departure from the traditionally invincible protagonists often seen in Indian films.

He believes this shift in storytelling will render traditional, over-the-top action sequences obsolete. Varma also noted the film’s potential to intimidate filmmakers who rely on exaggerated “masala” films.

‘Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge’ is a sequel to the 2025 hit ‘Dhurandhar,’ directed by Aditya Dhar. The film stars Ranveer Singh reprising his role as Hamza Ali Mazari, alongside Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Rakesh Bedi, and others. The film was produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios and filmed in India and Thailand.

The film explores the rise of Hamza Ali Mazari in the Karachi underworld and delves into his origins as Jaskirat Singh Rangi, tracing his journey to becoming a covert operative. ‘Dhurandhar’ was set in Lyari, Karachi, an area known for its history of gang wars and violent turf battles, revolving around covert intelligence operations linked to events like the Kandahar plane hijack, the 2001 Parliament Attack, and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
