Rare Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Fetches Nearly $170,000 at Auction
A 2003 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra, nicknamed the “Terminator,” recently sold at auction for close to 1.7 million Norwegian kroner (approximately $168,000 USD), demonstrating a significant increase in value since its last sale in 2022. The vehicle’s exceptional condition, with only 22 kilometers (13.7 miles) on the odometer and original factory protective coverings still intact, contributed to the high sale price.
Price Surge Reflects Collector Demand
When new, a 2003 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra cost over 350,000 Norwegian kroner in the United States, adjusted for today’s exchange rates. Even as considered a high-performance variant of the fourth-generation Mustang, the SVT Cobra was relatively affordable. However, the recent auction result indicates a surge in collector interest and willingness to pay a premium for pristine examples.
According to Carscoops, the car’s price nearly doubled from its 2022 auction value, highlighting the rapid appreciation of this particular model.
Exceptional Condition: A Time Capsule
The SVT Cobra’s remarkable condition is the primary driver of its high value. With just over 22 kilometers on the clock, the vehicle appears nearly untouched by time. The original protective plastic coverings remain on both the fenders and mirror housings and the interior plastic coverings on the seats and steering wheel are still in place.

The “Terminator” Legacy
The 2003 SVT Cobra earned the nickname “Terminator” due to its potent performance. It features a 4.6-liter supercharged V8 engine producing 390 horsepower, coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. According to Wikipedia, the SVT Cobra was a high-performance version of the Ford Mustang and was considered the top-of-the-line variant.
Performance tests conducted by Car and Driver showed the SVT Cobra accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 4 seconds and completing the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds.
The future value and potential use of this exceptionally preserved Mustang remain to be seen. Whether it will continue to appreciate as a collector’s item or eventually be driven on the road is yet to be determined.
