Rat Infestation Damages Vehicles in Dartmouth Parking Lots

Dartmouth, Nova Scotia – Residents of several apartment complexes in Dartmouth are facing a growing problem with rat infestations, leading to significant damage to vehicles parked in the area. The rodents are chewing through wiring, causing costly repairs and leaving residents frustrated with the lack of a swift resolution.

Vehicle Damage and Resident Concerns

Jamie Cleveland, a resident of an apartment building on Portland Street, discovered the extent of the problem when a warning light illuminated on his Ford Escape’s dashboard. Upon inspection, he found extensive damage to his engine caused by rats chewing through the wires. He has incurred $1,000 in repair costs each time his vehicle needed to be towed to a mechanic, with a $250 deductible covered by his insurance. MSN, CBC

Cleveland is not alone. Several other residents in the Highfield Park neighbourhood report similar experiences, with approximately seven or eight other vehicle owners in his building experiencing rat-related damage. CBC One woman, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of landlord retaliation, stated her boyfriend’s work vehicle was damaged and she has witnessed five other vehicles being towed from her parking lot in recent weeks. Property Management Response

Highfield Park Residential Inc., which owns 20 apartment buildings in the neighbourhood, acknowledges the increased rat population. Property manager Wanda Savoury attributes the rise to ongoing construction in the area but believes the situation is not unique to their properties, noting similar issues are being reported throughout Halifax Regional Municipality. Fumigation has already been completed at one property, and treatments are scheduled for all 20 properties by the finish of the week.
