Since their initial founding a few years ago, the wrestling programs through Clark County Public Schools have grown.
“Our program continues to grow each year, and the support from CCPS has really been the catalyst to bring wrestling to (middle school) and youth student-athletes,” said wrestling coach Chad Grant.
The last full weekend of January put on full display evidence of that growth.
Hosting the Region 4 Tournament, RDC, located at 1600 West Lexington Avenue, saw many of its performers excel at a high level.
“We had some outstanding performances by both our returning wrestlers, but also some of first year wrestlers stepped it up to qualify for states…RDC advanced three wrestlers to the state finals, and all three are first-year wrestlers,” Grant added. “(It’s) remarkable how far they and many others have come in such a short few months.”
The tournament featured over 500 wrestlers, making placement all the more difficult.
Nevertheless, regional players from RDC were Neko Watts, Brayden Gillispie, and Christopher McCord.
While Watts, a seventh grader, finished in 7th place and Gillispie, a fifth grader, finished in fifth place, fellow seventh grader McCord finished in third place courtesy of four pins.
This accounted third most of any competitor in the tournament.
Yet that’s not all.
Twenty-two youth wrestlers were sent to the state tournament.
Performers included first graders Kendrick Gashel, Christian Hoskins, and Everett Moore; second graders Mason Baker, Walt Catron, Declan Fletcher, Rylee Hobeika, Sawyer Hudson, Max Rivera, Wilder Sheshull, Arryk Wedwick; third graders Euin Catron, Sammy Grant, Easton Ritchie, and Gage Shearer; 4th graders Elliot Belt, Moses Petrenko, Bohdi Sheshull, Dawson Smith, Harvey Smith; and fifth graders Gunner Couch and Rhett Johnson.
“Also, a hat tip to Bohdi Sheshull, who had the fastest Tech Fall in 1:48. Beau Grant also had the 5th fastest pin of the tournament, 10 seconds is a fast pin,” Grant added. “The coaching staff is very proud of all the wrestlers and wish them all luck as they train the next three weeks for the State Finals in Louisville.”
