Monestier-de-Clermont: A Town Transformed by Modernity

Nestled in the heart of Trièves, at the gateway to stunning landscapes, lies Monestier-de-Clermont. Its a town dramatically defined by the A41 viaduct, an notable double-girder bridge that opened on March 21, 2007.

Spanning 860 meters and soaring 70 meters high, this concrete and steel giant provides a direct route to Trièves and Provence. Before the viaduct, traffic had congested the main road through town – a route used as 1830. While the toll might deter some locals, the connection to the A51 also brings the Grenoble area within easier reach.

Remarkably, the viaduct’s scale doesn’t overshadow the town’s charm. It allows for expansive views of the surrounding landscape and preserves the intimate, authentic atmosphere of Monestier-de-Clermont, sheltered between the clermont and La Salette mountains.

The motorway’s arrival spurred residential growth. New housing estates like Chatras, Portes du Trièves, Combe du Mas, and Grandes Prairies have sprung up on either side of the RD 1075.

“Some people from Grenoble, looking for a greener lifestyle, are now searching for homes in Monestier-de-Clermont and the surrounding area,” explains Stéphane Dol, a real estate advisor at Espace Immo 38. This trend has only accelerated since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Attractive Prices and a full Range of Amenities

Monestier-de-Clermont offers a compelling combination of convenience and quality of life. The town boasts a motorway service area, an SNCF train station (with connections to Grenoble-Clelles Mens and Grenoble-Veynes-Gap), nursery, primary, and middle schools, a swimming pool, a gymnasium, and a newly renovated dojo in the former college gym. Residents also have access to a nursing home, an intercommunal library, and local shops.

“It’s a town of 1,500 people with the amenities you’d expect from a town of 4,500,” says Sandra Boizot, the director of municipal services.

While housing options are limited – there were 697 homes in 2022, including 492 individual houses – the number of properties available increased by 6% in the last year.
