Cadets of Class 63 of the Virginia Commonwealth Challenge Youth academy (CCYA) engaged in a “Reality Store” simulation on November 15, 2025, at the State Military Reservation in Virginia Beach, Virginia, designed to enhance their financial decision-making skills. The event, hosted by the CCYA Counseling Department in collaboration with BayPort Credit Union, provided a practical learning experience focused on managing real-world finances.
Reality Store: A Hands-On Financial Experience
The Reality Store presented cadets with assigned life scenarios requiring them to create and adhere to a monthly budget. Participants made choices regarding essential expenses such as housing, transportation, food, childcare, and insurance. This immersive activity is part of the CCYA’s Life Coping Skills class, a core component of the program’s curriculum.
According to Julie Rosario-Kenas, lead counselor at CCYA, the event’s success was due to the dedication of volunteer Sailors and CCYA staff. The simulation aims to build financial literacy, encourage critical thinking, and promote responsible planning for future life goals.
