Rebecca Ferguson to Have Limited Role in Dune: Part Three

Rebecca Ferguson, known for her portrayal of Lady Jessica in Dune and Dune: Part Two, will have a significantly reduced role in the upcoming Dune: Part Three, appearing in just one scene. This limited appearance comes at the direction of director Denis Villeneuve, who felt it necessary despite the character’s minimal presence in the source material, Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah.

A Brief Appearance for a Key Character

Ferguson revealed in an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that her “journey was number one and two,” and that she initially wasn’t even slated to appear in the third installment. “I don’t even think [Lady Jessica] was supposed to be in three,” she stated. “And then Denis was like, ‘I need to have one scene.’ And I get one scene.” [Nerdist]

This decision aligns with the plot of Dune Messiah, where Lady Jessica is largely absent. However, Villeneuve has been known to develop adaptive changes to the source material, as evidenced by the teaser trailer released earlier this week. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Dune: Part Three: A Shift in Tone and Story

Villeneuve has described Dune: Part Three as a departure from the previous films, characterizing it as a “thriller” that is “action-packed and tense.” He noted that while the first film was about exploration and the second was a war movie, the third will focus on the consequences of power. [The Hollywood Reporter] The film will continue to center on the relationship between Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya).

Latest and Returning Cast Members

Alongside Chalamet and Zendaya, the film will feature returning cast members Josh Brolin, Florence Pugh and Anya Taylor-Joy. Robert Pattinson joins the cast as Scytale, a character popular among fans of the books. Jason Momoa will also reprise his role as Duncan Idaho, despite his character’s apparent death in the first film. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Villeneuve’s Vision for the Dune Saga

Villeneuve has stated that he doesn’t view the three films as a traditional trilogy, but rather as an adaptation of the first book, with a potential third film existing as a separate entity. “It’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” he explained to Vanity Fair. Dune: Part Three is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. [Nerdist] The previous two films have collectively grossed $1.1 billion worldwide. [The Hollywood Reporter]
