Latvian National Opera Hosts Star-Studded Production of Verdi’s ‘Aida’
The Latvian National Opera presented Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida on March 15 and 17, featuring a cast of internationally acclaimed opera stars, including Marina Rebeka and Elīna Garanča in the title roles. The production marked a significant event in the history of the Latvian National Opera, bringing together both Latvian talent and renowned international performers.
A Stellar Cast Takes the Stage
Soprano Marina Rebeka and mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, both celebrated Latvian opera singers, performed the roles of Aida and Amneris, respectively. French baritone Ludovic Tézier made his Latvian debut as Amonasro, and Georgian tenor Irakli Kakhidze performed as Radamès. The performances were conducted by Italian conductor Lorenzo Passerini, also making his debut in Latvia.
A Production Rooted in History
The staging of Aida brought back a production originally premiered in 1998, with restored set designs that recapture the original brightness of the ornaments depicting Ancient Egypt. The production team included artist Ilmars Blumbergs, director Māra Ķimeli, and conductor Ęintars Rinkevičs.
Critical Acclaim for Performances
The performances were praised for the emotional depth and vocal prowess of the lead singers. Marina Rebeka’s portrayal of Aida was noted for her expressive range and ability to convey the character’s despair, and vulnerability. Elīna Garanča’s performance as Amneris was lauded for its complexity, showcasing the character’s jealousy, ambition, and eventual regret. Irakli Kakhidze’s powerful tenor voice suited the role of Radames, even as Ludovic Tézier delivered a compelling performance as Amonasro.
Supporting Roles and Orchestra
The production also featured strong performances from Edgars Oshleya as Ramfis, and Laura Gretzka as the high priestess. The Latvian National Opera Chorus and the orchestra, led by Lorenzo Passerini, received praise for their contribution to the overall quality of the performances.
